Terrace
The terrace was obtained by carving out a space from the refectory area on the lower floor. The view from this point, in addition to allowing the enjoyment of the extension of the abbey complex, enabled to have a perfect view of the coastline to the west of the city of Taranto, the Cheradi Islands and the profile of the Old City, details which are now precluded due to the presence of the tanks of the nearby refinery.

The upper floor
The upper floor
Access to the terrace is on the upper floor of the complex via a staircase facing the refectory. This floor consists in a corridor with overlooking cells, and a second room, characterised by a door decorated with a frame and corresponding to the area occupied by the presbytery of the church on the lower floor.
An interesting detail is the presence, in one of the cells, of two masonry stools, placed one opposite to each other under the window, for prayer and observation of the landscape..
A second access door with a more accurate decorative rendering showing a frame in carparo animated by bas-relief rosettes and engraved motifs, and surmounted by the coat of arms of the Order of Olivetan monks, opens onto the main corridor. This opening gives access to a steep staircase that leads to the roofs of the church, two octagonal tuff spherical caps, and to the remains of the bell tower.

Today, the two ENI plants and the Acciaierie Italia (former Ilva) plant are located around Santa Maria della Giustizia but, in the past, the landscape that the monks could enjoy was entirely different. This terrace dominated the surrounding area and one’s gaze could rest on an ancient Taranto, on the olive groves surrounding the structure, on the splendid sea of Taranto and its islands.
It is through manuscripts and maps of that period that this 3D reconstruction was created, the same one that you can explore in an immersive experience through the official application of Santa Maria della Giustizia and the technology of the AR CoperniKo® portals.
